Straw Marquetry

A french marquetry technique in which rye straw is harvested, dyed, split, flattened and glued to a substrate. The incredible sheen is from the strength of the fibers that allow the grain to withstand the rains in the field. The technique was popularized during the Napoleonic era and is so laborious that it was relegated as a task for prisoners to perform.
